I met this great French group while away in the south of France, Makali. They actually have two photographers in the band who shoot all of their own photos, (and do a pretty good job I must say), but they never had taken a full band portrait, since it was always one or the other of them always shooting! One thing led to another and I offered to shoot a few photos of them. Lumières à Goult dans le Luberon, Cote d'Azur/Provence (France)

Walking in the south French countryside trying to figure out if it's worth going back home to such a ridiculous government, then realizing the French just elected Sarkozy... Goult, Cote d'Azur/Provence (France) .

Walking around the westside shooting with friends Mark (who happens to be the guy who hooks up these web pages for us) and Lupe, the Pipas, for fun.

In Paris, France shooting another old friend Brett Ratner, directing Roman Polanski in a cameo role, for his 3rd in the series of "Rush Hour" movies. (Brett and I met while he was a skinny teenager in film school. I edited his first music video, for Public Enemy. And he used to assist me during photo sessions. I actually helped him get his first directing jobs and now his films have grossed more than a billion dollars!)

Vice magazine are the behind the scenes producers of a new talk show program featuring one of my favorite people on the planet, Ian F. Svenonius, as the host. The first night of taping in the basement of the world famous Guggenheim Museum building, two other favorites of mine were the guests: Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins. I shot these two photos with my fiancée's digital camera.

Out at Coney Island in New York, when it should have been freezing cold, My girlfriend needed a shot of one of her new bikini designs ASAP for a catalog. And lucky for us it turned out to be an almost summer day.
1 November 2005

As part of the ERMP (East River Music Project) summer series in cooperation with New York City Parks & Recreation, The Evens (Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina) finally made it to NYC for a show. Here at this interesting band-shell amphitheater down on the Lower East Side by the river, this is the 1st B&W shot I took of them (as well as a Kodachrome). It was a great set of "adult punk rock". Beating out the predicted storms and all, it was an incredible, beautiful afternoon.

This is the last batch of images that will be considered for inclusion in this idea I've had for several years now.
Sorry can't share until it's actually published.
But the new book should be out by mid 2005, I'm hard at work putting it all together now.

This is just a snap shot I took with my girlfriends digital camera at the 35th birthday bash of our baller friend Sean "P-Diddy" Combs. Ironically just steps away from where I saw Ralph Nader speaking just a few days prior. It was an incredible party, quite a fancy formal affair, and although I did comply with the required tuxedo, I was happy to be wearing my own FUCK BUSH t-shirt instead of the tuxedo shirt, cumber bun and bow tie. Jack Purcell's were also in order at this high fashion event.
4 November 2004

This was the second presidential election in a row that I spent the day before listening to Ralph Nader. This time on Wall Street in New York City, the heart of capitalist amerikkka. Nader was speaking out against corporate crime and his great ideas of where the country should be going.

Here's a shot I took with my rarely used 6x7 camera, to get a good archive image of the Liberty Street Protest before I had to remove the signs from the 6th & 7th floors later in the day. Taken below street level inside the "hole" from the PATH train station at "Ground Zero" to get this angle.
10 September 2004

Here's a nice time exposure, shot digitally with a borrowed camera, of the Liberty Street Protest by the former World Trade Center site in New York City the night before the protests of the Republican National Convention were to begin.
28 August 2004

I shot The (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY at several New York City locations including The United Nations complex, Times Square, and the Williamsburgh Bridge. These shots were taken for the promotion of their forthcoming new album "Armed Love" produced by Rick Rubin.

The Evens (Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina) went on their first ever tour. Of course I had to go to see them. We took the train more than an hour north of New York City to Beacon, New York where they played in a small coffee house. Besides seeing the best of friends and having great soy mocha's, the performance was GREAT! Look around on the net and you could find some of their music. A record well worth owning should be coming out in the next few months.

The annual Fugazi, free outdoor show at Fort Reno, in their home town Washington, DC, was a little earlier in the summer this year, and for a change did not get rained on. There were people in front of the stage for as far as the eye could see. As usual, inspiring and a great time.

Almost 20 years ago I shot a very similar image of Ian MacKaye & Jeff Nelson in this original DISCHORD "office". At their request I shot it again for the 20th Anniversary box set they are putting together. You'll get to hear and see the special box set later in 2002, which will include the original shot from 20 years ago, as well as one from this day.

The most surreal trip ever. I was invited to go to Jamaica for a friend's birthday, when my country decided 2 days later to go to war.
3 of my favorite shots from 9 October 2001

I was flying on a commuter plane over New York City. The views were so incredible I had to take a couple of shots. I didn't finish the roll that this one was on until October. I had forgotten all about it... Quite a weird surprize.

Here's a shot of my good friends Russell Simmons and his old friend Kenny Lee (who's now his personal driver). This one was shot as an aside while shooting the cover for Russell's new biography "Life and Def" being published later this year.

I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Al Sharpton, Ralph Nader and Cornel West among others this day before the U.S. Presidential election, when I was invited to Reverand Al Sharpton's "National Action Network Headquarters" where Ralph Nader was to speak. I took these two shots in Al's office where we were all talking about the intense politics of the moment. After getting comfortable with everyone I asked if anyone would mind if I took some shots, (then took out my camera and got a few good ones). This was certainly one of the most exciting days of the last year for me.

The (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY shot in Stockholm, Sweden in front of the main government building (Capitol/Parliament) of Sweden. This relatively new group from the northern area of Sweden has some interesting political rhetoric and more than a few similarities to one of my favorite American bands, the Make-Up. Worth checking out for sure. The singer used to lead the REFUSED who were also heavily influenced by the other Svenonius band Nation of Ulysses.

FEMI KUTI with most of his group and dancers in Central Park, New York City. Femi is the son of the infamous FELA ANIKULAPO-KUTI (1938-1997), sometimes referred to as the "Black President" of Nigeria, and seen as a social engineer, concerned with the issues of injustice, corruption, and the abuses of power. He would often lay his life on the line in defense of such causes. Femi continues in the same musical spirit of his father with the "Afro-beat" sound. - This was an amazing show at the Summer Stage. As Guy Picciotto told me when I missed Femi and crew when they played in town last year, "That's a mistake you don't want to make again". After this show, I know I won't.

PEARL JAM - ChinaTown - NYC
11 April 2000

I was told that PEARL JAM had not shot a session in several years and would only shoot one now if it was with me, (that was nice). I knew a very little bit about them, beside some cool political things they've done here and there, and I was never really a fan of their music. But we did have some friends in common. As I asked around about them all I heard were nice words - OK ? So I went for it . . . Here are a few we did from the session that will be used for publicity around the world.
