Photomonth

Glen E. Friedman's FUCK YOU ALL exhibition will be part of the 6th annual Photomonth in Krakow, Poland this May. "One of the most important new photography festivals in the world. Among this year's invited photographers are world wide known celebrities of photography scene - such as Thomas Dworzak, Glen E. Friedman, Lauren Greenfield, Larry Clark, Jim Goldberg and Fernando Moleres, as well as several young emerging artists." GEF will be at a 'vernissage' on Sunday May 11th at the Camelot gallery in the city center.

GEF has recently finished working on two collaborations with graphic artist Shepard Fairey. They are using iconic GEF photographs of Tony Alva and Public Enemy for limited edition graphic posters done in the usual Fairey style. Signed by Friedman, Fairey, and Alva/Chuck D. to be sold in the coming months to collectors through the Obey Giant web site. The Alva posters sold out in a matter of minutes.

Back in December Glen was interviewed by Ian Svenonius live in front of an audience at the Independent & Small Press Book Fair, at the Center for Independent Publishing in New York City. We have posted the interview on our video page.

Glen E. Friedman, considered one of the most important photographers of his generation, became well known for working with such rebellious artists as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C, KRS-1, and Public Enemy, as well as old school skateboarders like: Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta, among others. Many of his photographs are recognized as the subjects' definitive portraits. His graphic documents of the movement reveal the science of defiance upon which all are based. Friedman's photos reflect the spirit of progression and angst that defined an era. Not only was he in the right places at an extraordinary number of appropriate times, Friedman has helped define the moment and movements he was caught up in. His process was much more incendiary than it was documentary. According to Henry Rollins "The bottom line is that he was there at the beginning of so much cool stuff in so many different areas it's not funny."

"Inspiring people, with integrity and rebelliousness."
For the past quarter century, Friedman has been doing just that.
- Los Angeles Times
"One of the greats of his generation."
- Washington Post
"The most prolific photographer of his generation."
- American Institute of Graphic Arts
"The esoteric political and aesthetic conscience of his generation..."
- Juxtapoz magazine
"Outspoken, individual, and the very best at what he does...
It's time Friedman was listed alongside Capa, Bresson, and Avedon."
- Candy Culture
"His photos achieve what so many others only aspire to —
they show the spiritual within the physical."
- L.A. Weekly

There have been shows over the years from both books separately, but it is the combination of both exhibits as FUCK YOU ALL that has been continuously traveling. A great success, the shows have brought Glen's work to interesting locations in several major cities around the world. Including London England's ICA just down the road from Buckingham Palace and right opposite the Houses of Parliament, in Sydney Australia at the Pavilion Art Gallery on Bondi Beach, also in Harajuku and Shibuya, Tokyo Japan! Several Italian dates including the hugely famous "Pitti Immagine Uomo" in Florence, RedDocks in Torino, C.S. LEONCAVALLO in Milan, The International "Mappe Percorsi Urbani '99" Festival in Catania, Sicily, and at the "Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea" in Rome. As well as on the west side of Chicago, the center of the city in the old Berlin, Germany, in Georgetown, Washington D.C., downtown Philadelphia, at the amazing Kulturhuset in Stockholm, Sweden, Los Angeles. and most recently in Antwerp, Belgium.

Remember DogTown? Or just inspired by it at some point in your life? Well this summer comes the major feature motion picture, fictional account of the Z-Boys story, that indeed GEF had nothing to do with. But if you want to see a bit more of the previously unseen reality, check out these photos recently uncovered of Glen and Tony Alva, shot by Michael Welman the same late afternoon as one of the most famous DogTown images.

At New York University on February 26th, 2005, Glen participated in an in-depth discussion/event, regarding the making of hip-hop's greatest album: PUBLIC ENEMY'S "IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK". Chuck D., Hank Shocklee and many others were also there sharing knowledge and opinions. click on the L.P. cover for all the details.

We were all very saddened to hear about the horrible senseless death of our friend Jason Mizell a.k.a. Jam Master Jay. Glen created this icon as a collaboration with Shepard Fairey and Sean Bonner in tribute. Our best thoughts and memories go out to his family, friends and fans. Click on the icon or links to see a page of classic un-released images of Jay and Run-DMC shot by GEF.

Glen contributed one of his classic photos for "Cruel and Unusual: an Exhibition to benefit the West Memphis Three". The opening reception was a huge affair, hosted by Wynona Rider as well as others and featured a lecture by Jello Biafra. This exhibition took place at sixspace in Los Angeles during September 2003. 100% of proceeds went towards the WM3 Legal Defense Fund.

Glen is participating in a group show "Beautiful Losers" that takes an in depth look at contemporary art and street culture. It opened at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2004 and since has been traveling around the united states and the world.

The exhibition brings together artists from multiple disciplines, whose works are inspired by various aspects of urban life and street culture. Included are painters, sculptors, photographers, filmmakers, performance artists, graphic designers, illustrators and multimedia artists. The exhibition is organized in five sections: One section is devoted to examining those artists who have had direct influence on the development of the generation of artists and designers that is the focus of the exhibition. This section will include paintings, drawings, photographs, graphics, and samples and documentation of early works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Neil Blender, Henry Chalfant, Larry Clark, R. Crumb, Glen E. Friedman, Raymond Pettibon, Pushead, and Craig R. Stecyk III; and the hand-painted skateboards of DogTown's Wes Humpston.

Glen has one of his images included in The Kodak Rock Photography Collection. After years of preparation, "Rock-X-Posed" opened in Las Vegas, Nevada in January 2003. 500 Photographs, 130 Photographers, 543 individual musicians, represented in photos from 68 cities in 13 countries. The show will tour ten U.S. cities. "Five decades of rock attitude in pictures from the 50's to today." Most of the shots are the expected typical rock classics and worse, but there are also a few cool shots including a GEF photo of the Dead Kennedy's, Jello Biafra, in the audience at a show from 1982, that appeared in the book FUCK YOU TOO.

At the FUCK YOU ALL show in Rome, the "Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea" at the University of Rome, "La Sapienza", published a catalog that was given away for free to the first 1500 people who requested one - no need to say that after an estimated 2000 people showed at the opening , only those that were held in reserve were able to be distributed periodically throughout the rest of the exhibition. It came out really nice, but if you have FUCK YOU HEROES and FUCK YOU TOO already you aren't really missing anything other than the biography on Glen. (to see that written piece in it's original Italian or the translated into English version just click on the cover).

As far as the film "DogTown and Z-Boys" is concerned, Glen's official credit as Co-Producer and Creative Consultant, barely explain the major influence he had on this feature length documentary. But those who know Glen best can see where his marks were and weren't made in content, story, and music, as well as the obvious photo contributions. The film was shown publicly for the first time at the Sundance film festival in 2001 where it won the audience choice award for best documentary. It has also won several other internationally respected festival awards since. View the official movie trailer here, and for more info go to the Un-Official Z-BOYS web site. Super-X media was a magazine that was usually given away free of charge, that was only available if given to you by someone who works for them or at particular events of interest around the world - very high quality with beautiful design and photography. C.R. Stecyk III (who was a major influence on Glen when he first started taking pictures, and wrote pieces for each of his 3 books) was one of the senior editors. After they did a major feature on Glen in the first issue, he was asked to come on as a senior staff member. To check out their archive, go to www.superXmedia.com. It was published about twice a year and included contributions from Glen in each issue.

At the EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT in Seattle, Washington, Glen was asked to participate on two panel discussions, among related activities that included live concerts, skating demonstrations, and culture workshops that "Explored the Rebellious Skate Punk Scene, and how Skateboarding and Punk Rock became so intertwined with each other". It took place for 3 days in mid August 2000. Check out more about the "Hey Punk" event including an article from The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

May of 1998 was the second time the FUCK YOU ALL exhibit appeared in Tokyo and once again it was a success.
While in Japan, Glen did his usual number of controversial interviews, go to the press page to check out one of the latest, or here from "S@S Tokyo" in English or Japanese.

There was an Exhibition of works by influential artists of the 70's with affinities to the punk scene at Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica California entitled "FORMING: The Early Days of L.A. Punk" that was shown on April 10th until June 5th 1999 - Glen loaned a few pieces from his FUCK YOU ALL Exhibition and several other images from his archives for this special show.

dial house appeal

NOV. 2001 - Glen donated the above 3 pieces of his work to the DIAL HOUSE APPEAL charity event which included an exhibition in London, England and an on-line auction of all the work contributed by artists from around the world who have been influenced, inspired or at the very least appreciate the work of those affiliated with the CR@SS collective. The Dial House Trust, started by members of the group CR@SS has been "A Centre for Dynamic Cultural Change" for 30 years. Click on any of the links for more information.

An interview/documentary film with Glen E. Friedman, made by the Fluid Video Crew from Rome Italy, entitled "FUCK YOU ALL", was shown at The internationally recognized, 17th annual, Torino Film Festival in November '99, this festival is "composed of both curiosity and love for the cinema, a look to the future and a memory of the past". Watch a quicktime video of the documentary here [20 minutes].

FUCK IT

Glen's FUCK IT! Mo'Wax visual sampler is a 40" x 60" full color double sided poster. (one side has samples from FYH & FYT while the flip side has a collage of over 50 previously un-published images).
Since 1998 Mo'Wax has been undergoing some major upheavals, so the FUCK IT! poster official release date has been cancelled indefinitely. We're very sorry to hear this news from James LaVelle.

In December 2001 Glen participated in the grand opening show, at the very short lived, NEW YORK CITY URBAN EXPERIENCE MUSEUM with a few of his old hip-hop images. There were pieces on display from many of NYC's most renowned graffiti artist's and films from some of the scene's best and lesser known film makers. Entertainment at the opening was provided by the legendary the Rock Steady Crew and the Zulu Nation.

"Bringing it all back home" to DogTown for Z-Boys... There was a book signing event on Sunday April 21st, 2002 at Hennessey + Ingalls, Art and Architecture Books in Santa Monica, California. G.E.F. as well as C.R. Stecyk III and several of the original Z- team were there to celebrate the release of  "DogTown - The Legend Of The Z-Boys". Everyone was signing books for over three hours straight! (Here's a silly photo of the crew in attendance.)
